Vimium is a browser extension which provides keyboard shortcuts for navigation and control in the spirit of the Vim editor.

Losing focus and getting lost while looking for that browser tab from *earlier* is a drag on getting things done. Even minor slow-downs in how you navigate within and between pages can pull you out of your flow. There are so many minor aspects of your browser-based workflows that chip away at your productivity.

Vimium extends how you use the browser with a highly-efficient, keyboard-centric workflow. Vimium leverages powerful concepts from the Vim editor (`j`/`k` for scrolling, `f` for following links, `/` for find, etc.) allowing for faster navigation and interaction without the need to switch to the mouse.

Don't worry, you don't need to know anything about Vim. Anyone who spends a lot of time in the browser and is willing to learn a few shortcuts has a lot to gain from using Vimium.

This course demonstrates the core features of Vimium through practical, real-world use cases. Even if you only adopt a few of the shortcuts, you'll find yourself using the browser in surprising, new, and speedy ways.

An introduction to "Why Use Vimium" and how to install it in your browser of choice. Though this entire course uses Chrome, Vimium is also available for Edge and Firefox. There is a lot that Vimium can do — on-page navigation, moving between tabs, interacting with links and other page elements, and much more. We'll get into all of that in the following lessons.

A powerful navigation and interaction feature, and probably my most used Vimium feature, is Link Hints. By hitting `f`, we prompt Vimium to overlay link hints for every visible link, button, and interactive HTML element (e.g. a text area). By typing the keys corresponding to a link hint, we effectively click that link or element. We also look at a few page movement commands like scrolling up (`k`) and down (`j`) as well as jumping to the top of a page (`gg`) and to the bottom (`G`). Putting all of these together, we can get into a fluid and efficient flow for common browser tasks.

The Vimium Chrome extension enhances page navigation and searching. By pressing forward slash, users enter find mode to search terms on the page. Additional keys like 'N' and Shift+N help navigate through search results forwards and backwards, respectively. The extension proves especially useful on complex web pages, like Stack Overflow, for quickly locating specific sections like answers or share links without reading through all the content.


Vimium's `yy` shortcut makes quick work of grabbing the URL for the current page. I find this useful for linking to an article in my notes or sharing a web page with my team in Slack/Discord. We'll get a glimpse at a couple other features like `gi` (for "go to input") and `o` to open the URL on the clipboard.

With these advanced URL manipulation commands we have a whole new way to think about traversing between locations on a website. This is especially useful for sites like GitHub that use a hierarchical URL structure. Since each layer of the URL is a valid page, we can move up that structure (with `gu`) and edit the current URL (with `ge`) to navigate somewhere else.

Vimium's "marks" feature lets you mark positions in the current tab and across tabs. These are positional markers that you can jump back to. For instance, as you browse a huge page of documentation or a massive forum discussion, you can leave a series of "dog ears" to sections or conversations that you'll later want to revisit. Each tab supports its own set of lower-case letter marks. Upper-case letter marks are shared across tabs allowing you to seamlessly move between a specific set of tabs regardless of how they are arranged.

Many aspects of Vimium can be configured in order to bend the tool to your specific needs and use cases. We look at how to configure what sites turn off Vimium, the default search engine, link hint characters, and other basic settings. We also see how both insert mode and searching a visual selection work. Custom keymappings and custom search engines are covered in subsequent lessons.

Another aspect of Vimium's configurability is customizable key mappings. We can add new mappings and override existing ones. If there is a certain Vimium feature you want to make easier to trigger, adjust the key mapping to suit your needs.

Vimium's Vomnibar is a "command palette"-like search tool for your open tabs, browser history, and bookmarks. We can search through and jump to any tab open across browser windows. We can also do a generalized search with results that also include browser history and bookmarks which can either be opened in the current tab or a new tab. If you're anything like me, you open tons of tabs and visit hundreds of webpages over the course of a week. The vomnibar puts all of that at your fingertips.

Get Started with Vimium

[00:00] The Vimium Chrome extension is one of my favorite tools that I have in my tool set. It's an extension that I have in Chrome, although it's available on Edge and Firefox as well, that I use to navigate and do all kinds of things in the browser without necessarily having to reach for the mouse. Now it's not a big deal to have to reach for the mouse, but sometimes I just get into a bit of a flow or a bit of a rhythm and it's nice to just keep my hands on the keyboard. Before getting into keyboard shortcuts and all of the other features that Vimium has to offer, which are coming up in subsequent lessons. Let's first look at installing Vimium.

[00:37] So I've opened this separate Chrome profile where I don't have Vimium yet installed, and I've gone to the Chrome store where I can find the Vimium extension, and I'm gonna add it to Chrome. This gives me a prompt where I'm being let know about the different permissions that Vimium is allowed to have. And I'm going to add the extension. Now it pops up here under my extensions. I'm going to ignore the turn on sync and just close that.

[01:06] Let's go back to the Vimium homepage and then let's go under the extension drop down here and pin Vimium. Now it's appearing as gray, indicates that it's not working, and I think that's just because we need to reload the page. So I'm going to hit Command-R, and now it turns blue. On any new page that I were to go to, such as a Google search, we would see that it's appearing blue as installed and I can you know start using some of the different features which we'll get into in the upcoming lessons. So you should have it installed now and get ready to see what Vimium can do.

[00:00] It's really specific to each person's workflow, how they might employ Vimium. So I'm just going to demonstrate one of the key features that I find useful. So open a link. So this F command here, I find really useful for moving around a page, clicking on links, all from my keyboard. So if I jump over to this GitHub repository here, I can just start off by hitting F, and I'm going to see a bunch of little yellow tags appear.

[00:30] All these tags are appearing where there are links or items like a text box that can be interacted with on the page. So I wanna go to pull requests, so I just hit the key combination that is by the link I wanna go to. So that's gonna be JE up there in that sort of top navigation. So I'm gonna hit J-E and it navigates to pull request. Now I'm gonna see several pull requests that I want to look at, evaluate, and potentially merge.

[00:57] So I'm gonna start with this thruster one. So I'm gonna hit F again, F-M. That's gonna jump me to the pull request. Now, there's not a lot of detail in the pull request as it renders, but I can see if there's a changelog and commits items that I can disclose. I'm going to go ahead and hit F again, DG, see the change log, build with go.

[01:21] That doesn't seem super consequential to my repository. I think it's going to be fine. So I'm going to go ahead, hitting J to navigate down. I can hit K to go back up. These are all the kinds of key bindings that allow you to move around.

[01:36] I'm gonna see the rebase and merge. So I hit F and hit FF to hit that rebase and merge. I can hit escape if I decide I don't want to hit a particular link quite yet. I could also interact with this dropdown. So I'm gonna hit SF instead.

[01:53] And now I see that I have two different options. If I hit F again, I can switch which of those options I wanna use, hit AW, and now it's squash and merge. I don't want to use squash and merge though, so I'm going to go back and do SW, rebase and merge. F, I'm going to hit AD, and now it's going to prompt me to confirm. So I'm going to hit F again and then hit SC to confirm.

[02:20] And I can even go as far as to delete the branch, so F and then AE. Great, that branch is deleted. I hit GG to go back to the top. Hit F and I can now see JF will take me back to the pull request. So you kind of see you can get into a little bit of a flow here where you just hit F move to a thing, scroll around, hit F move to a thing.

[02:41] So I'm going to go to the next one then. I can hit AP. That's going to jump to this next one. Standard is just a dev tool. Let's see what's in the changelog.

[02:53] Again, nothing too consequential. I feel good about merging that as is. I'll go ahead and flfsf. I hit it too quick. The page shifted on me, but that's fine.

[03:07] I hit escape and then can hit, oops, jumped on me again. I must have triggered it the first time. So now I'm going to go back to pull request page, and I see one more that I want to look at, jl. And the dependent bot re-rendered the page on me because there's some rebasing happening that's going to affect the PR. So that's fine.

[03:42] Let's look at the release notes once more. You can see some different things going on here. And you know, I want to take a closer look at these before I merge them into a repository. So I'm going to call it good there, but I guess just to illustrate the point, I can interact with this text area. So SP, I can say, let's test this out in dev before merging it in.

[04:09] I hit escape, F, S, W, and that applies my comment. Oops, I'm still focused. Now I can see my comment appeared there. And yeah, that's one of the ways that I use Vimium to quickly move around my browser, do different things, interact, navigate to links, and generally just get into a nice rhythm with the work that I'm doing.

[00:00] The Vimium Chrome extension has a nice way of moving around a page and finding specific things on a page that you're looking for via a search or find type feature. Now most browsers are going to have something like Command-F where you can search for something, but I sort of like the Vimium way of doing it. So if I hit forward slash, we can see that this box pops up here and I can start to search for something like find. And it jumps me down to this using find section on the Vimium GitHub page where I can see basically the feature that I'm describing. Forward slash to enter find mode, N to cycle forward through the matches, capital N to cycle backward to previous matches.

[00:46] So I can hit enter to finalize that search and I can hit N to go to the next and the next. I can hit shift N to go back through. So let's look at where this might be useful in a sort of real world setting. So I've ended up on this stack overflow page. Now there's a long question.

[01:08] I think it's related to what I'm trying to figure out. I don't want to read through the whole thing, but what I do want to do is jump to the answers. So I'm going to go ahead and hit forward slash and start typing answers, and it zips me down to the beginning of the answers where I can see the 38 answers. So that's a lot of answers, and I can escape out of that. And now I can see, you know, start to read through this first answer.

[01:33] Now I like what I see in this answer, so perhaps I want to share it with someone, so I can go ahead and search for share. I often have trouble finding this link on the Stack Overflow pages. It just sort of blends into the rest of the text, so it's nice to be able to search for it. Now that I've found it, I hit enter and it focuses it. It gives the browser focus to that element which is nice because then I can hit enter and that pops that open and I could hit escape and F which we learned about in another lesson, and DH will copy that link then.

[02:06] I've still got share as my search keyword, so if I hit N, it's going to jump me to the next one, which is sort of a way of getting around jumping to the next answer. So I see the next answer, I can hit N again and it'll jump me down to the third answer and so forth. You can also hit Shift N to go back up to those different answers. If I hit question mark, I can see the details of everything that Vimvim offers, and again we'll see find mode described here. It's a great way for navigating around a page.

[00:00] A very common workflow for me is that while reading an article on the internet in Chrome, I will be writing up some notes. VS Maybe they're in a gist like this, maybe they're in another text editor like Vim or BS Code, and I'll get to a point where I want to include the URL of the article that I'm reading so that I can have that reference. This is especially handy in a situation where I'm writing markdown because then I can create a link essentially. And Vimium really helps me out with this workflow. So I will hit escape to stop typing into this text area, and then I'll hit shift-K to go over to this article that I'm reading.

[00:39] And now, Vimium offers, we'll hit question mark to view the help, Vimium offers this yy command right here. Now y in vim stands for yank. It's sort of the same thing as copy. So we're going to hit yy and that is going to put the current URL, the URL of the current page onto our system clipboard. And you'll see in the bottom right corner that that appears right as I hit it.

[01:05] It says yanked and then the URL. So now I can hit shift J to go back over to this gist that I'm working on. And now there's another fun feature of Vimium which is to hit GI and that's going to focus the primary text area or the most recently used text area on the page. In this case, there's a couple different text areas on the page, so we're going to see an interesting behavior. I hit GI.

[01:30] Now, the red one is the one that's in focus and we can see the blinking cursor, but I can even tab through to the other ones. But ultimately this is the one that I'm interested in and I've still got that URL on my paste buffer so I'm going to hit Command-V to paste it in. Similarly I might yank the URL of a page I'm reading and then pop over to Discord or Slack or wherever to then paste and share that link with people that I'm working with. It's just a nice way to quickly grab the current URL. So there are two other quick things we can do once we have a URL on our system clipboard.

[02:07] So I'm going to hit shift J to jump over to this one and I'm going to hit YY to yank it. And then I'm going to hit shift K twice to get back over here. Now if I hit lowercase p, that's short for paste, and that's just going to use the current URL and go to that URL in the current tab. So we can see it immediately advances to this Vimium one that I just yanked, and I can hit shift-h to go back. Similarly, if I use shift P, that's going to open the URL that's on my system clipboard in a new tab.

[02:43] So if I've grabbed a URL from somewhere else and I want to open it, that's one way I can do that.

[00:00] Let's look at a couple of the advanced URL manipulation features of Vimium. Now these are features that are not documented in the help that's included with Vimium, but they are documented in the README if I jump over here. So you'll find some additional advanced browsing commands. So I find with Vimium that it's helpful to read both the included help and the readme docs that are in the repository. So I'm going to hit shift j to jump back over here and I'm going to hit Escape to leave the help.

[00:34] Now I'm on the page for a specific pull request in the Vimium repository. The first thing I want to look at is GU, which stands for Go Up, or that's at least how you can think about it. If I hit G capital U, that's going to go all the way up. So I hit G capital U, and we'll see it just takes me to github.com, and I'll hit shift H to go back to where I was. Essentially what gu is going to do if I hit the lowercase version is it's going to move me up one portion of the URL at a time.

[01:10] So let's take a look at that one step at a time. I'm going to hit g lowercase u, And it goes up to my polls. If I hit GU again, it's going to go up to the Vimium repository. If I go up again, I'm going to go to this person's GitHub profile page, and then I can hit Shift-H to start going back in history to where I was. There's a lot of websites that are structured similar to GitHub where you end up in this nested URL structure and so this can be a nice way to say look at a pull request, then go up, then hit F and go to the next pull request, so on and so forth.

[01:48] So that's G capital U and GU. Go all the way up and go up one. The next advanced feature that I want to look at is GE, which is sort of the ease like edit. So you can edit the URL if you would like so I'm gonna hit GE and that's gonna pop open this Input area that's sort of overlaid on the web page where I can then say edit this to be 4620 And then I can hit enter and go and that takes me to a different page. Or I can hit GE and just get rid of that and just go to issues.

[02:26] I'm going to hit shift H to go back. And now the other thing you can do is you can hit G capital E. It's going to bring up the same prompt, but now whatever URL that I submit, it's going to open it in a new tab.

[00:00] Marks are one of those odd features of Vimium that is sort of hard to imagine using until you see it in practice. The idea behind a mark is that you can set a mark for yourself anywhere on a page and that's a point in the page that you can jump back to. You can think of it as the ability to bookmark several spots in a page such as a big documentation page. I'm going to look for bat... No, expansion.

[00:31] And shell expansions jumps up. I'm going to hit F to trigger the link following feature, and then H to go to shell expansions. And now I'm just going to start browsing. This is me just on a documentation page trying to learn a bit more about some Bash features. As I'm going, I say, read this, and I think this is an interesting example.

[00:56] I want to check this out, but I'm going to mark it for now so that I can keep reading. I'm going to use the A mark to start, so I'm going to hit MA, and we can see in the bottom right corner, it said created a local mark. Now I'm gonna keep scrolling, and I'm scrolling quickly, but imagine I'm taking my time in reading, and I'm now into this portion of the shell expansion docs where seeing these different examples and I see parameter colon offset. Okay, I need to learn more about this. So now I'm going to set another mark and just to go in alphabetical order, this one's going to be lowercase b so I'm going to hit mb and I'll look again in the bottom right corner say create a local mark b and now I'll keep going and let's say I eventually get somewhere else in the page and I think this is a great example too.

[01:49] So I'm going to go ahead and say MC, and I've created a couple marks. So now how do I jump to those marks? Like let's say I've finished reading the docs, I'm all the way down at the bottom of the page. Now I want to go back and look through the different places that I bookmarked to remind myself, oh yeah, this was interesting, I want to read more about this. So now I hit tilde, or sorry, not tilde, but the backtick, which is the same key as tilde.

[02:14] I hit backtick A, and that's just going to jump me to this point in the document. Remember we looked at this here? Now if I hit backtick B, it jumps me to this parameter colon offset, and then if I hit backtick C, it jumps me to this third portion that I had marked. I can hit double backtick and it'll go to the previous jump point. So it goes right back to my B mark.

[02:38] And if I hit it again, it'll just go back to my C mark. I've been using lowercase letters this whole time to set what are called local marks, but I could instead use capital letters to set global marks. So if I instead hit M, Shift, A, I've created a global mark. And now let's say I'm over here on this page. I've got a couple different tabs open that I'm browsing around, reading documentation in various places, and now I want to cycle back through my global marks.

[03:08] I can do that by hitting backtick shift A, and it's going to move me to the tab and location of that global bookmark that I've set. So again, marks are kind of an odd feature that Vimium provides, but if you keep an eye out for when they might be useful, especially when browsing along forum or a big page of documentation, You might find that they're a nice way to be able to mark your spot and be able to jump around the document without too much fuss.

[00:00] Let's talk a little bit about configuration with Vimium. So when we have the plugin or the extension installed and enabled, it's going to appear up here on Chrome. So we can click on that and we see this pop open. We're going to ignore this for a second and we're going to go to options. This opens up a tab that allows us to configure options for Vimium.

[00:23] There's only a couple things in here that I want to focus on. The first and probably most useful is excluding certain URLs from being used by Vimium. These are URLs where we don't want the Vimium key bindings to override whatever other functionality that page does. So Gmail is a good example of this. There are all kinds of custom key bindings that Gmail enables, and I don't want to clobber those with the Vimium key binding.

[00:50] So I just say, if I'm on a Gmail site, let's not enable Vimium. Let's see another example of this. So Wordle, I want to be able to type in these letters here. So I can type in an A and that appears, but as soon as I type something like GE, well that triggers the GE Vimium keybinding instead of adding the letters G and E to Wordle. So instead, what I want to do is I can go back to the options, and I can add a rule, and I could enter in the URL there.

[01:26] An easier way of doing it, though, is to go back to the WordAll page, click on the Vimium extension, and click Exclude Vimium Keys on this page. And this is the rule it wants to add. Maybe I don't want to do it for all of New York Times, but I would like to do it for GamesWordle. And then I want to exclude all keys and then save changes. So that should be saved, can X out of that.

[01:57] If I come over here and refresh, I see that pop up. Now, if I type in GE, it's going to put in those characters. Now, just to show off one neat feature of Bimium, if I get rid of that rule, save changes, GE is going to pop it open again, but I can put myself in insert mode by hitting I. We see that this tells me down here that I'm in insert mode. Once I'm in insert mode, all keys that I send to the browser are going to be ignored by Vimium except for the escape key, which means they'll get passed through to the page itself.

[02:34] So now I can type GE and it gets passed in. And then when I'm done and want to be back in normal Vimeo mode, I can hit escape and I leave it in insert mode. But I digress. So excluding URLs, that's useful for various web pages. Custom mappings we'll go into in a different lesson, same with custom search engines.

[02:56] Otherwise there's some advanced options. I tend to leave all of these as they are. For instance, you can modify what characters pop up when you hit the F key. I think what they have there is good enough. So these are mostly the ones on the home row, and then a few others that are right within reach of the more dominant fingers.

[03:16] So I like to leave these as is. I guess if you were working with a different keyboard layout, like Dvorak or something like that, you might have some opinions about what these characters should be. Another one to point out, I tend to use Google, but if you prefer to use DuckDuckGo, you can set that as your default search engine. That way when you're on a page like this and you search for something like corn shell, and then you go into visual mode and hit shift P, This will pop open in Google with a search for corn shell, but if you were to set this to something like DuckDuckGo, then it would run that search against DuckDuckGo instead. These Previous and next patterns, if you happen to use pages where you want to be able to navigate forwards and backwards through sequences of pages, these are the keywords that they look out for for those links.

[04:14] You can modify CSS, things like that. I'll leave the rest for you to explore just by coming to this options page, but I've highlighted the things that I find useful.

[00:00] Let's look at how we can customize keyboard bindings in Vimium. If I go over to the extension and click Options, that's going to open up this tab where we can add custom key mappings right in this text area here. Now to the right, we have a couple examples of how we can map and unmap key bindings, as well as add comments, and then there's a link that shows available commands, which we'll look at in a second. So first I'm going to hit GI to focus this text area, and for my example I want to unmap capital J and capital K from being the ways that I go to the previous and next tabs. And instead, I'd like for the A and F keys to do that.

[00:44] So first I'm going to unmap j and unmap k. Now I want to map a, but what am I going to map it to? Well, let's hit escape, f, and show available commands. Here we see all of the Vimium key bindings, and then annotated next to them are the commands. So if I scroll down, we find the J and K options and we see that the command keywords for these two are previous tab and next tab.

[01:15] So I'm going to click that to copy it, escape out of here, and GI to refocus this text area, and now I can paste in previous tab. And then similarly, I'm going to map F to be next tab. Now, since I'm mapping over what F does, I should probably replace the functionality that F had before. So typically F is going to be the key binding that gives us link hints for navigating links on a page. So I'm gonna have to map something else to that.

[01:53] So let's say Control F, and then what's that command called? Well, I can go over to the command listing again and find link hints doing a search for that by using the forward slash. I've found it. I'm gonna hit V to go to visual mode. I'm gonna highlight the whole thing and Y to copy it.

[02:15] Escape out of here. GI to focus. And now I can paste that. So now Ctrl-F will activate the Link Hints mode. And in the same way, I'm going to go ahead and map C-F to be the pair to activate mode, which if I hit FL again I can scroll down and find link hints next.

[02:41] So here's the other one. Capital F opens the link in a new tab, so I'm going to grab that as well, GI and paste that in. So I've now unmapped J and K, I've mapped ctrl-F and ctrl-F to the link hints functionality, and then I've mapped A and F to be previous and next tabs. So I'm going to escape out of here, hit F because I haven't saved these changes yet, W to save them. So I'm going to hit T to open a new tab and go to GitHub.

[03:15] And now I've got a third tab open and I can hit F to cycle forward, and I can hit A to start cycling back. And then of course I can hit Ctrl-F to turn on the Link Hits feature.

[00:00] One of the more powerful features of Vimyum is a feature called the VomniBar. To give you an idea of how it works, let's first look at a Chrome feature. If I hit Command-Shift-A, it pops open some tabs, and if I start typing, it's going to narrow it down to any tabs that match the text that I've typed in as a keyword. And if I hit Enter, it's going to jump to that tab. So let's hit G0, jump back here.

[00:26] Now the Omnibar works sort of like that, but has some additional functionality. So if I hit O, it pops open this input area, and if I start to type in svelte, it's going to give me that option as well as some options from my search history, from my Chrome history rather. I can escape out of that. Let's instead look for lobsters, and I can jump to that tab. Or if I hit Shift-T, it'll just search through tabs, and I can look for postgres, and I see this option here is going to jump me to that tab, so on and so forth.

[01:05] Now if I do Shift-O, whatever I select is going to open into a new tab. So I'm going to type in bigint, And I see a history item as well as some bookmarks that I've made in Chrome. So if I go and hit Enter on this item, it's going to open that in a new tab. I'm going to hit G0 again, because I want to now talk about how search engines factor into what the VomniBar is able to do. So if I hit O-W space, it now just says Wikipedia.

[01:36] This is because I have a custom search engine built into VomniBar for Wikipedia. And if I start typing something like Unix, I'm going to see these different options pop up. And if I select one, it's going to jump me to the Unix Wikipedia page. I'm going to hit Shift-H to go back. Now let's do Shift-K to go over here and look at a custom search engine that we might want to do.

[01:59] Here's the Wikipedia one that's already baked in. Now what if I'm to want to add MDN for instance? Well, let's see what search on MDN looks like. So I'm going to hit Shift-K twice to get over to this MDN site, and I can see that I've already done a search on MDN for the keywords text area. I'm going to go ahead and yy to grab that under my paste buffer, and then I'm going to hit shift J twice to get back over here, gi to focus this text area, and paste it in.

[02:30] Although text area isn't what I always want to search for. I want to search for whatever has been typed in the Omnibar. So I'm going to remove that and instead put percent S, which is what they're instructing us to do here. Then I'm going to escape FW to save those changes. Now, if I pop open the bar and I hit MDN, space, I'm searching MDN now, and I can look for on change.

[02:57] This pops open a search on MDN and I can start to look through what's available for a change event. Though I'm not a heavy bookmark user, I will point out that you can hit B to search through your bookmarks, or you can hit Shift-B to again search through your bookmarks, which will be the variant of opening it in the current tab versus opening it in a new tab.
